Shift

A shift describes the working pattern of an individual period of work. A shift may run over one or more calendar dates and may be split into periods of work and rest.

A shift normally defines either the specific times a worker will be at work or having breaks or the total number of hours they should work (in the case of flexible working).

Shifts are usually used in conjunction with a time monitoring system to validate that employee worked the expected hours. A shift forms the building blocks of an employee’s roster.
