Data Analysis

Data analysis results in the identification of the structure and nature of the data involved in a system or process. This analysis is then used to aid the design and structure of databases which can be used in data management systems.

In systems with a fixed database structure data analysis is a critical stage of their design, it will be possible to rectify errors later on but not without incurring additional costs. Systems with a flexible database structure can be more easily augmented or adapted during their life time.

A data analyst will use a variety of sources to aid their description of the data. This can include an analysis of existing computer or paper-based systems. Interviews with members of staff and observations of activities and processes as well as analysis of documentation relating to policies and standards.
